Port Blair, Jan 10: In a press conference held today at the Police Headquarters, the Commandant (IRBn) Mrs. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, shed light on the remarkable achievements of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) in Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the year 2023. The presentation underscored the unwavering commitment of the force to national security, technological innovation, community development, and holistic well-being.
Commandant Niharika Bhatt, addressing the media, shared a comprehensive overview of the notable accomplishments of IRBn in 2023. The achievements showcase the battalion’s dedication to ensuring the safety and prosperity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As described by the Commandant (IRBn) the achievements are:
Anti-poaching Operations: Protecting National Boundaries: In 2023, IRBn conducted rigorous anti-poaching operations in association with other sister agencies 10 or more occasions in geographically challenging topography such as Barren Island (active volcano), Narcondum, and Tillong Chaung Island, which are considered to be very sensitive given its proximity to the international maritime boundary. The efforts of IRBn led to the apprehension of 72 foreign poachers, emphasizing the battalion’s dedication to safeguarding our national boundaries. Further, it is pertinent to mention that, the A&N Police have taken a holistic approach to upgrade the strategically located Look Out Posts across the Island like LOP Tillong Chaung wherein new portable generator sets, satellite phones, solar lights, water filter cartridges and sufficient water storage tanks were provided so that the Jawans on guard duty can have a healthy and comfortable lifestyle even in far flung and un-inhabited Islands.
IRBn Pays Tribute to the Late Sub-Inspector Sanjeev of A&N Police with Inauguration of Modern Model Barrack: The IRBn has dedicated a modern model barrack having state-of the-art facilities as a tribute to honour late Sub-Inspector Sanjeev, who was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for displayed exceptional courage and dedication in the line of duty during the devastating event of Tsunami in the year 2004. The barrack has been significantly revamped and equipped with contemporary amenities, symbolizing the commitment of the IRBn personnel who are always performing duties in tough and geographically constrained locations and once they return to the Unit (HQ), they can avail such enhanced facilities to elevate their morale.
Technological Advancements: QR Code-Based Inventory and Body Mass Index (BMI) Database Management: IRBn took a significant leap towards technological advancement by introducing a QR code-based inventory management system for government properties. Integration of unique QR code in each & every Government properties, streamlines the process of tracking, tracing and organised database for better accountability. Furthermore, a software-based Body Mass Index (BMI) database management system has been implemented to monitor the fitness and well-being of the battalion jawans.
Waste to Wonder Project Continues: The IRBn always prefers to work on “Waste to Wonder” projects by using the discarded wastes/materials of the Battalion in an effective way rather than dumping it. In the same way, a Cafeteria in the name of late Constable Vikram Singh Rana as “Rana’s café” functioning within the Battalion for the welfare of the Jawans, has been enhanced with some mesmerising and skilfully crafted add-ons to uplift the overall aura and also as a tribute to late Constable Fedrick, an eco-friendly gym “Freddy’s Fit Zone,” crafted from recycled materials, was inaugurated at IRBn HQ Port Mout by Director General of Police. Such sustainable initiatives stand as a strong determination and unwavering commitment to recycle/reuse the waste material in a fruitful way.
Apart from this, IRBn in association with the Agriculture Department established a program on bio compost pit techniques. This initiative demonstrates the battalion’s commitment to environmental sustainability and agricultural practices. This collaborative effort not only showcases the versatility of the battalion but also highlights its dedication to contributing positively to the broader community. The focus on bio compost pit techniques aligns with environmental conservation goals and supports local agricultural development. Such proactive approach of the Battalion in addressing various aspects of community well-being beyond its primary security role.
Vibrant Celebrations of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” during the Independence Day: IRBn celebrated “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” throughout the year with heart & spirit which culminated during Independence Day in a week-long event themed “Meri Maati Mera Desh.” During the celebration various activities which includes bike rally, excursions for students and teachers, cultural programme “NAMAN– Mitti-ka-Naman–veeron-ka-vandan” which is specifically designed to pay tribute to our heroes who laid down their life while on duty in A&N Police. The ‘FitRise75’ run, was also a showcasing event for the Battalion’s spirit, commitment, and dedication, in which about 200 Police personnel/citizens were participated from various walks of life. Apart from this, as a part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations, a special screening and a drawing competition was also organized at IRBn HQ, promoting patriotism and environmental awareness amongst the children.
Training Initiatives: Strengthening Skills and Expertise: The IRBn, A&N Police is always in the first line of defence in any natural and manmade disasters. Apart from this to curb the menace of poaching activities in the high seas and dense jungle the IRBn is committed to display a high level of operational preparedness. Therefore, to enhance the professional capability, the IRBn personnel are frequently trained to upgrade their skills. During the year 2023, a total of 22 IRBn personnel have been trained in specialized commando school which consolidates to a total of 118 commandos to tackle any untoward situations. Besides, in the year 2023, about 10 IRBn personnel have also completed a Personal Security Officer course from NSG, Manesar Haryana, which enhances their proficiency in protection services.
Skill Development for Families: Nurturing Traditions and Promoting Economic Stability: In a view to develop the skill development training the IRBn in association with the Directorate of Industries, organized a 15-day training programme for the family members of IRBn personnel. The program focused on coconut shell, bamboo, and wooden handicrafts, providing hands-on training to 40 participants and contributing to the preservation of traditional crafts and economic stability. Apart from this, 02 personnel successfully completed a calligraphy course, showcasing the battalion’s commitment to diverse skill development
Introduction of New Weapon: Advancing Modernization Efforts: In a significant step towards modernization, IRBn has successfully inducted the Joint Venture Productive Carbine (JVPC) into its weaponry. This innovative weapon, designed specifically for the Indian Armed Forces, enhances the battalion’s capabilities, which will ensure preparedness and effectiveness in challenging situations in future.
Presence at Island Tourism Festival 2023: Showcasing Local Pride: The stall of Andaman & Nicobar Police at the Island Tourism Festival 2023 was a resounding success. IRBn personnel, with their exceptional talents, played a crucial role in designing and managing the stall, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diverse contributions of the police force in maintaining peace and security. Visitors had the opportunity to interact with talented officers, adding a unique touch to the overall experience.
Recruitment Drive: Strengthening the Force: IRBn was selected as the one of the venues to conduct the recently concluded recruitment drive for the Andaman & Nicobar Police and other specific posts. The Physical Recruitment Drive, held at the headquarters in Port Blair, addressed various positions within the A&N Police. The choice of IRBn as the location for the recruitment drive is strategic, and its positive outcome reflects well on the organization’s dedication. The involvement of IRBn in hosting such events highlights its role in supporting community safety and its commitment to the well-being of the region.
Sport Events: Fostering Team Spirit: The IRBn is as always sports-centric organization apart from its regular duties and commitments. Recently, the IRBn has hosted a Badminton tournament and organized other sports events for the families and children of IRBn personnel. These initiatives conducted at IRBn HQ are not only aimed to promote fitness, camaraderie, and a sense of community among the personnel and their families but also it will enhance the fitness level and reduce the stress in general.
Swachh Bharat: Commitment to a Clean and Green Environment: As a part of Swachh Bharat Campaign, duly initiated by Government of India, the IRBn has enthusiastically participated in several plantation drives, which showcases its dedication to environmental conservation. Recently a massive cleanliness and plantation drive was organised on the occasions of World Environment Day within the IRBn campus and planted about 1000 saplings of fruit bearing trees.
Overall, the IRBn being a significant and integral part of A&N Police remains a dedicated unit of excellence, innovation, and community service. These accomplishments in 2023 demonstrate the battalion’s integral role in preserving national security, fostering well-being, and contributing to the holistic development of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
