Port Blair, Jan. 9: The Andaman & Nicobar Fire Service & Emergency Services, working professionally and braving all odds, have been able to save lives and property during fire accidents that took place in the city and different parts of the Islands. The Fire Stations across the Islands attended 416 fire calls and 673 special service calls, successfully saving property worth more than Rs. 88 crores during the year 2023, informed the DIGP(Fire), Ms. Varsha Sharma while interacting with the scribes at Fire HQ here yesterday.
Highlighting the achievements and activities of the Fire Service, Ms. Varsha Sharma provided additional insights into their commendable efforts. Firefighting classes were conducted, sensitizing 32,291 individuals, including students, teachers, government employees, and civilians. Additionally, 324 Mock Drills were carried out in Fire Stations situated across the Islands, ensuring preparedness in emergency situations.
Ms. Varsha Sharma also shed light on the functioning of the Police Marine Force, equipped with 90 personnel (Crew) and 10 Fast Interceptor Boats, along with 65 other boats such as FRP, Gemini, etc., to vigilantly monitor intruders in creeks and other strategic locations. She highlighted the recent launch of a Quick Response Team, patrolling the harbor area 24×7. The Police Training School, equipped with modern facilities, trains new recruits to further enhance the capabilities of law enforcement in the region.
In a move to involve the community in enhancing Fire Safety and Response capabilities, the A & N Fire Service initiated the ‘Fire Mitra’ Scheme. This program involves community members in assisting the Fire Service of A&N Islands during Fire & Emergency situations. A standardized training module has been designed for 167 Fire Mitras, providing them with the basic knowledge and skills required to respond immediately to the needs of the area during any Fire Incident. The training focuses on survival, search and rescue, casualty handling, and assistance in firefighting operations.
