Port Blair, Nov 28: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary to solve the issue of power crisis in Swaraj Dweep.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration he mentioned that Swaraj Dweep is currently grappling with a severe power crisis, leading to frequent and prolonged power cuts.
He added that The consequences of this power crisis are far-reaching. Tourists visiting Swaraj Dweep, a significant face of the Andaman and Nicobar Tourism Industry, are experiencing daily inconveniences due to 10 to 15 power cuts. These disruptions are not only tarnishing their experience but also leaving them understandably frustrated.
Furthermore, he added that hotel owners are forced to rely extensively on generators, incurring additional expenses. Many hotel owners are reporting significant financial losses, with expenditures ranging from 3 to 4 lakhs on diesel for generator usage in a month.
The Member of Parliament added that small hotel and guest house owners, as well as restaurant and business proprietors, are particularly burdened, having to invest in power backup solutions that strain their resources as small entrepreneurs.
“The general public is also affected, voicing concerns about the frequent power outages and the resultant inconvenience,” he added.
Considering the critical role Swaraj Dweep plays in the Andaman and Nicobar Tourism Industry, the Member of Parliament requested the Chief Secretary to address this power crisis. He also requested to arrange for an adequate number of DG sets for Swaraj Dweep to end the ongoing power shortages and mitigate the hardships faced by residents, business owners, and tourists alike.
