Mayabunder, November 20: In a show of unity and determination, almost all PRI (Panchayati Raj Institutions) members from North and Middle Andaman organized a mass peaceful dharna at Mayabunder today. The event, conducted under the banner of “N&M Andaman PRI’s Organization,” addressed a multitude of pressing issues.
The demands presented during the dharna covered a broad spectrum. Among them were calls for the devolution of power to PRI’S under the provisions of the 73rd Constitution Amendment Act of 1993. Equal rights and opportunities for North and Middle Andaman, compared to their counterparts in South Andaman, were also advocated.
A particular emphasis was placed on the urgent need for the proper construction of NH-4 from Baratang to Diglipur, aligning with the standards set for South Andaman. The demand for a CBI inquiry was also voiced. Additionally, the participants called for the appointment of medical specialist doctors and technicians at District Hospital, Mayabunder, ensuring proper medicine availability.
Other notable demands included the immediate construction of Rural Roads under PMGSY, appointment of teachers in all schools in North and Middle Andaman, requirement and faculty introduction at MGGC Mayabunder, and the re-engagement of all 45 DRMs in Zilla Parishad North & Middle Andaman.
Further demands encompassed the declaration of Areca nut (supari) as a state crop for crop insurance, acquisition of new buses in North & Middle Andaman, immediate allotment of Stone Quarry in the region, and ensuring the proper supply of LPG connections.
Another banner highlighted specific demands, such as the appointment of a Medical Board to investigate the cause of death of a 7-year-old girl, G. Riya, in Pokhadera under Mayabunder Tehsil. The urgent need for specialists and technicians with proper laboratory facilities at District Hospital, Mayabunder, and the emphasis on NH-4 construction in North and Middle Andaman within a specified timeline were also underscored. Large number of local leaders and public participated in the mass peaceful dharna. Further details regarding the outcome of the dharna is still awaited.
