Port Blair, Jan 23:The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM today inaugurated the Subhash Mela, organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at Bakultala. The Lt Governor lit the ceremonial oil lamp to inaugurate the mela and garlanded the portrait of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He also visited the stalls put up by different departments of the Administration and private organizations.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Lt Governor expressed happiness that the Subhash mela has been organised to mark the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
He further stated that Melas are not only sources of entertainment, but it promotes friendly relationship and brotherhood among the people. Through the Mela, activities of different departments are being brought to the knowledge of the people under one roof. Departments put up their stalls in the Mela and generate awareness among the people about the various schemes and activities being implemented by the respective departments for the welfare and benefit of the people, he stated.
He further stated that with the creation of North & Middle Andaman District, this area had witnessed rapid development. The promotion of tourism and other sectors in this part of the Islands had generated self-employment opportunities for the people and PRIs, Banks and other departments are actively assisting in this endeavour. He also appreciated that Panchayats have also taken up several development projects in this area which besides creating facilities for the people have also generated employment. He further stated that the Administration is committed to provide basic amenities such as water, electricity, education, health-care and roads to the people of the rural areas of the Islands. The Lt Governor also paid floral tributes at the statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at Bakultala junction.
A colourful cultural programme was presented by the school students to mark the occasion. The Adhyaksha Zilla Parishad, N&M Andaman, Smt. Madhuri Giri, PRI members and people of the areas also graced the occasion.
