Port Blair, Oct 13: Former Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, has voiced concerns over the frequent and prolonged power cuts in the these Islands, which have left residents increasingly frustrated. He made these remarks during a press conference held this morning.
Addressing media persons at BJP office today he said that recently he had requested to meet the Prime Minister of India but later on the direction of PMO he met the Home Minister of India and highlighted some crucial issues relating to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Mr. Ray highlighted that plans were put in place with to generate 50 MW of electricity through LNG power plant for an uninterrupted power supply in these Islands. However, no progress has been made by the administration to implement these plans. He added that the administration has shifted its focus towards solar energy, contributing to the current state of electricity shortage in the islands.
The former Member of Parliament lamented the worsening condition of roads in these islands, emphasizing that a significant portion of the 539 kilometers of NH and rural roads are in deplorable conditions, with 242 kilometers being in extremely poor shape. He pointed out that the closure of Quarry in South Andaman District for the past year has led to a rise in the cost of construction materials, adversely affecting road construction and other projects.
Regarding various water projects Mr. Ray demanded Rs. 200 crores from the Home Minister.
He noted the lack of funds at Zilla Parishad, Samiti and Panchayat levels, resulting in a standstill in various developmental works. He specifically mentioned the release of a mere 24 to 25 lakh rupees to a particular Samiti, which he likened to a drop in the ocean.
Ray concluded by stating that some individuals are politicizing the issue of NH connectivity without fully understanding the complex challenges involved in infrastructure development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He said that he has recently met the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, who has assured him of suitable action in coming dry season.
