Kamorta, Sept 10: Residents of Kamorta, a village in the Nancowry group of Islands, are expressing their gratitude to the Tribal Council Nancowry and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration. Their appreciation comes after a four-month-long issue of muddy and yellowish tap water supply was addressed and resolved finally.
On 31 August 2023, the villagers held a protest, urging the authorities to take immediate action on the water issue. In response, the Assistant Commissioner of the Nancowry Islands convened a meeting with the Tribal Council and officials from the Andaman Public Work Department (APWD).
During the meeting, APWD officials shed light on the root cause of the water problem. They explained that complications in the filter bed of the water treatment plant and issues with the tender process were the main reasons. The officials also requested the Tribal Council’s cooperation to expedite the tender process.
In a commendable gesture of community collaboration, the Tribal Council decided to contribute six truckloads of beach sand, approximately 30 tonnes, to replace the compromised sand in the filter bed. With the repair work executed swiftly by the APWD, the villagers are now receiving clean and transparent tap water. The villagers, along with government officials stationed on the islands, have expressed sincere gratitude to both the Tribal Council Nancowry and the APWD for their proactive approach and speedy resolution.
