Port Blair, Sep 08: In a matter of grave concern, The Andaman Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee President Mr. Rangalal Halder has highlighted the issues pertaining to the deplorable state of National Highway 4 (NH-4) at North & Middle Andaman, specifically the stretches from Baratang Jetty to Adazig Area, Uttara Jetty to Police Outpost Camp No. 3 and Parlobjig 15 No. Gate to Rangat Bazaar, as well as Basantipur to Rest Camp Area.
In a letter addressed to the Lieutenant Governor, A & N Islands, Mr. Halder stated that the deteriorating road conditions of NH-4 have reached an alarming level, endangering commuters’, medical services and essential goods transportation.
He said that the Emergency medical services, which rely on swift and unobstructed transportation, are seriously impeded by the pathetic condition of the NH-4 roads. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and crumbling infrastructure have made travel on this vital artery hazardous.
He added that this road has not only led to an increase in accidents but also impeded the socio-economic development of the region as it is disheartening to observe that despite repeated appeals and representations from us and the local communities, the condition of the NH-4 roads continues to worsen.
He mentioned the strategic importance of this highway for the island’s connectivity and development but its current state poses risks associated with using these roads have only been exacerbated by factors such as adverse weather conditions, wear and tear, and insufficient maintenance.
Meanwhile, Mr. Halder further informed that In the event, if no concrete steps are taken to address this issue within the stipulated time frame of 15 days, then the Congress Party is prepared to stage a massive agitation to draw attention in light of this matter.
