Port Blair, August 10: The Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) is all set to host the ‘AICF Chess For Everyone’ All India FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament 2023 from August 11th to 15th. The prestigious event will be held at TSG Grand in Dolly Gunj, Port Blair.
With participation from over 160 players spanning across India, including local talents, this tournament promises to be a grand celebration of the game of chess.
The ‘AICF Chess for Everyone’ All India Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament-2023 is a significant event, underlining the commitment of ANCA to promote chess in the region. The event bears the AICF event code 323014/A&N/2023 and is organized in collaboration with the All India Chess Federation (AICF).
During a press conference held at Hotel Shompen yesterday in this regard, Mr. S. Ashok, President of ANCA, expressed his excitement, stating, “This tournament is a landmark occasion for us, being the first of its kind on the island. We have participants from 16 states across the country, along with representation from our islands. The tournament is conducted under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, signifying the growing popularity of chess in our region.”
Chess has been gaining significant traction in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with regular tournaments held each month. The ANCA Coaching Centre has played a pivotal role in nurturing local talent, as children from the islands are participating in mainland competitions and showcasing their skills, making the islands proud.
Mr. Ashok further highlighted the success stories, stating, “We have Kashthuri Bhai, who recently returned from Uzbekistan after representing India in the Chess Championship under the under-17 category. She brought home silver and bronze medals. Such achievements by our kids inspire us to organize tournaments like these, providing them with opportunities to compete against the best in the country.”
Mr. Tanveer Singh, Vice President of ANCA, shared his delight, stating, “This is a significant moment for Andaman and Nicobar Chess Association. We have successfully established a robust infrastructure for chess in the islands, including training facilities and national and international arbiters. Currently, nearly 50 to 60 children are being trained under ANCA’s guidance.”
The event witnessed the presence of B Neelaiah, General Secretary of the Chess Federation, Chess Prodigy R Kashthuri Bhai, and other prominent members, emphasizing the strong support that ANCA is receiving from both the administration and All India Chess Federation.
