Port Blair, Feb 22: The Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang Island Mr. R Alager Swamy along with Ex Pradhan of Nilambur Mr. Roy George Nilambur Panchayat Baratang islands, called on the Secretary-Cum-Director of Transport Department, Mr. Vishwendra, IAS, on 21st Feb 2023, to discuss the transportation problems faced by the residents of Baratang Islands.
The delegation raised several demands and problems of the Gram Panchayat and the region, including the need for a daily bus service between Nilambur Jetty (Baratang) to Diglipur as residents need to visit Diglipur for various official works. Before the pandemic, the bus was operated on a daily basis, but now it is available only twice a week. The delegation requested for its regular daily operation.
Additionally, they also requested a regular daily bus service from Nilambur Jetty (Baratang) to Billiground which is currently not being operated on Sundays. The delegation also requested the extension of the bus route from Rangat to Kadamtala to Nilambur Jetty (Baratang) to make it easier for residents to travel.
The shortage of buses in Baratang was also brought to the attention of the Secretary, and the delegation requested the provision of two new buses to meet the requirements of the locals. They also raised concerns about the shortage of technical and operational staff in Baratang, which is hampering the bus services in the area. The delegation requested that an adequate number of staff be posted to avoid any further disruption to the day-to-day services.
After listening to the delegation’s concerns, the Secretary-Cum-Director of Transport Department reportedly assured the delegation that the issues raised will be sorted out as early as possible. The delegation thanked the Secretary for his time and for addressing their grievances.
