Port Blair, Dec 20: The first ever rural film festival to mark the centenary celebration of Indian cinema opened in the remote island Little Andaman today.
The Inter Media Publicity Coordination Committee(IMPCC) Chairman and the Director of Doordarshan for Andaman and Nicobar region, R Mohan inaugurated this three day long film festival at ALHW auditorium this afternoon.
The festival began with the screening of a film “ RTI Anthem”, followed by Raja Harischandra, the first Indian silent movie by the veteran film maker, Dada Saheb Phalke. The Popular Hindi feature film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dubora has also been screened.
The film festival is being organized as part of the Bharat Nirman PIC in association with Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism, Andaman & Nicobar Administration and Directorate of Film Festivals in such a remote island, Little Andaman for the first time in the country.
The three day long film festival evoked much response among the islanders, since this difficult region do not have even a single theatre to cater to the entertainment needs of the people in the isolated group of islands.
According to the Nodal officer for the PIC, Dhanasekaran, the festival will be conducted in different villages of Little Andaman and the popular Hindi films, Fashion, Izahat and the Tamil film, Kannathil Mutthamittal by the eminent film maker Mani Ratnam will be screened.
Along with the feature films, the documentaries on Government flagship programmes will also be screened to empower the people with the required information on such programmes. This film festival is viewed as part of the initiatives taken by the Governments to provide all the urban facilities at the doorsteps of the people even in the far-flung areas. (PIB)
