Port Blair, Aug 21: The Transport Department has indicated that STS might run ATR night buses if there is a demand in this regard.
The statement came following several media reports saying people of North and Middle Andaman have been demanding resumption of ATR night bus service by STS, which was discontinued during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, a resident of N&M Andaman said that ATR night buses by Private Bus Services are indeed available but it remains in high demand and tickets are mostly unavailable. “The night bus services are very crucial for a single day trip and becomes convenient to the people of N&M Andaman to return home the same day after completing their any important work in Port Blair”, the resident added.
When Andaman Sheekha Daily contacted a senior officer of the Transport Department, it was informed that on 25th June 2019 night bus services started by the State Transport Services but within a few weeks it was stopped due to Covid-19 lockdown and also due to no demand. “If the STS department receives any demand from the area the department can consult the senior officials to start the service once again,” said the official, who does not want his name to be quoted.
