Port Blair, Nov 08: The fishing community of Great Nicobar Island today organized Chakka Jam at Zero Point area of Campbell Bay against operation of fishing trawler in Nicobar District and to demand sufficient quantity of Ice Blocks for fishermen.
As per information received, the Chakka Jam at Zero Point, Campbell Bay started early in the morning at around 08:00 AM, the agitating people spread out fishing nets all over the road as a mark of protest and also to block the road. Later at around 12:00 noon, Mr. Aditya Kumar Asthana, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner came to meet the protesters since they have been protesting for a long time. The AC reportedly informed the protesters that a signal has been received by Fisheries Department, which states that the ice blocks will be given to fishermen on a priority basis and urged them to withdraw their protest as their demands have been fulfilled.
However, protesting people maintained that this is not the only matter of ice blocks but the major problem is operation of trawler in Nicobar District.
It was learnt that around 400 people were present in the protest which included women, children, active fishermen, and senior citizens. They also shouted slogans against Administration and Fisheries Department during the protest today.
Keeping an eye on Chakka Jam necessary arrangements were made by Administration at Zero Point today to maintain law and order situation.
As per the source, till the last report poured in, all demands of the fishing community were not fulfilled yet and there is a possibility that the protest will continue tomorrow morning too.
