Port Blair, Apr 11: Immediately after today’s earthquake report and fears of tsunami, the Andaman and Nicobar Police evacuated all guards, including Radio Operators and Forest Guards from Indira Point area of Great Nicobar (Campbell Bay) Island, the last landmass of Indian Territory. All police guard reached Campbell Bay head quarter at around 5.40 pm.
However, Police Guards from uninhabited Tillanchang Island could not be evacuated.
“We have withdrawn all guards from Indira Point while guards of Tillanchang have been asked to move to higher grounds. We are in constant touch with them and they are safe,” Mandeep Singh Randhawa, the Superintendent of police of Nicobar District told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today
However, guards had a tough time at Tillanchang, as to reach higher ground, one has to run for nearly a hour. Moreover, the Island is infested with deadly snakes and movement in evening and late evening hours remain as a deadly task. One month back the Police Jawan ‘Mr. Grigori’ had suffered snake bite but it took more than six to seven hours to evacuate him to Car Nicobar.
